The firelight flickered against the dim walls of Lucian's study as Aveline sat across from him, her gaze sharp and unwavering. She had just witnessed the impossible-a shadowy figure that seemed born from nightmares and Lucian moving with inhuman speed and strength to protect her. The silence between them was heavy, thick with questions and half-truths.
"You owe me the truth, Lucian," Aveline said, breaking the silence. "What was that thing? And what are you?"
Lucian leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable. His long fingers tapped against the armrest as he considered her words. "What you saw was not of this world," he began cautiously. "It's... an entity I've been at odds with for longer than I care to admit. It's tied to my past, to choices I made that I cannot undo."
Aveline frowned, leaning forward. "And you? How are you able to fight it like that? How are you able to do... what you did?"
Lucian's eyes darkened, and for a moment, he looked almost haunted. "I am not like you, Aveline. I haven't been for a very long time." He paused, then continued, his voice low. "What I did tonight, what you saw-it's a curse, not a gift. I'm not proud of what I am."
Aveline's heart pounded in her chest as she tried to piece together the puzzle. "You're not human," she said softly, more to herself than to him.
"No," Lucian admitted, his voice like a whisper in the wind. "Not anymore."

The Haunting Connection
Aveline's thoughts swirled in confusion and intrigue. She knew there was more he wasn't saying, but the weight of his words felt genuine, as if he carried centuries of regret.
"Is that shadow tied to the poems?" she asked after a long silence. "To the heartbreak you write about?"
Lucian's jaw tightened, and he looked away, his gaze fixed on the flames in the fireplace. "In a way," he said carefully. "The shadow is a remnant of my past. A reminder of a betrayal and a loss so profound it changed me forever."
"Selene," Aveline whispered, remembering the name from his verses.
Lucian flinched at the sound of the name, but he didn't deny it. "Selene was someone I loved," he admitted. "But what happened to her... it set everything in motion. It led me to this existence, to this curse."
Aveline's heart ached for him, even as her curiosity burned brighter.
"Why won't you tell me the whole truth?" she asked.
"Why keep me in the dark when I'm clearly already involved?"
Lucian met her gaze, his expression unreadable. "Because some truths are too dangerous to share. Knowing them could put you in even greater danger. And I've already put you at risk by letting you into my world."
---
As the night wore on, Aveline couldn't shake the feeling that something was watching her. Even in the safety of the mansion, she felt the shadow's presence lingering, like an unseen predator waiting for its moment to strike.
Lucian, too, was on edge. He paced the halls of the mansion, his sharp senses attuned to every sound, every flicker of movement. The shadow had been growing bolder, and he knew it wouldn't stop until it had what it wanted.
"I won't let it take you," Lucian said quietly as he passed by Aveline in the dimly lit corridor.
She stopped him with a hand on his arm, her touch grounding him. "Lucian, I'm not afraid," she said firmly. "But I need to know what I'm up against. If you won't tell me everything, at least tell me how to fight back."
Lucian shook his head, his expression softening. "You can't fight this, Aveline. Not on your own. But I can. And I will."
Later that night, as Aveline tried to sleep, the air in her room grew cold. She awoke to find the shadowy figure standing at the foot of her bed, its red eyes glowing like embers in the darkness.
It whispered her name, its voice like a hiss carried on the wind. "Aveline..."
Before she could scream, Lucian appeared in the doorway, his presence commanding and terrifying all at once. "Leave her alone!" he snarled, his voice reverberating with power.
The shadow lunged toward him, but Lucian was faster. He moved like a blur, his strength and speed overwhelming the dark entity. The room shook as they clashed, their battle a whirlwind of energy and fury.
In the end, the shadow retreated once more, its parting words chilling: "You cannot escape your past, Lucian. It will claim her as it claimed Selene."
As the first light of dawn filtered through the windows, Aveline found herself sitting across from Lucian once again, her hands trembling despite her resolve.
"You saved me," she said softly, her voice laced with gratitude and fear.
Lucian looked away, his expression pained. "I'll always protect you, Aveline. Even if it costs me everything."
"But why?" she pressed. "Why do I matter so much to you?"
Lucian hesitated, his gaze meeting hers. "Because you remind me of her," he admitted, his voice barely audible. "Of Selene. And because I've already lost too much. I can't lose you too."
Though his words left her with more questions than answers, Aveline felt a strange sense of comfort in his presence. She didn't fully understand what tied them toge
ther, but she knew one thing for certain: she wasn't ready to walk away.
