12 : THE SHADOW'S GRASP

Aveline's heart thundered in her chest as the icy breath whispered across her neck. She spun around, but the room was filled in darkness. The storm outside howled, rattling the windows as if the night itself conspired against her.

"Who's there?" she demanded, her voice trembling but firm.

The only response was a low, guttural growl from the shadows, followed by the sensation of invisible eyes piercing through her soul.

Suddenly, the single remaining candle on the dresser flared back to life, illuminating the room in a flickering glow. The light revealed a tall, inky figure at the far corner, it's appearance is just like a fog in winter morning's . Its eyes glowed red, two burning coals fixated on her.

The shadow moved closer, slow and deliberate, its presence pressing against Aveline like a suffocating weight. She stumbled backward, her instincts screaming for her to run, but her legs felt rooted to the floor.

"Aveline!" Lucian's voice shattered the silence as he burst into the room. His eyes darted to the shadow, and his expression shifted from concern to fury.

"Get away from her!" Lucian yelled, his voice reverberating with supernatural power.

The shadow hissed, an ear-piercing sound that made Aveline clap her hands over her ears, its form lingering as though challenging Lucian.

Lucian didn't hesitate. He stepped between Aveline and the entity, his hand reaching out to grasp a silver pendant around his neck. With a single tug, he pulled it free and held it high. The pendant began to glow, emitting a brilliant light that filled the room suppressing the dim glow of the candle light.

The shadow form unraveling as the light consumed it. Within seconds, it was gone, leaving behind silence and the faint scent of smoke.

Aveline sagged against the wall, her knees weak. "What... what was that?" she managed to whisper.

Lucian turned to her, his face etched with concern. "That was no ordinary shadow. It's a wraith-a manifestation of the darkness tied to my curse. It's been growing stronger, feeding on my past... and now, it's coming for you."

Aveline stared at him, her mind racing. "Why me? Why is it after me?"

Lucian hesitated, the weight of his secrets pressing down on him. "Because you are tied to my curse in ways I still don't fully understand. The wraith sees you as a threat-as someone who can unravel the darkness that binds me."

Aveline's eyes narrowed. "And how do we stop it?"

Lucian's expression darkened. "We have to confront the source of the curse. The wraith is only a fragment of the true darkness that has haunted me for centuries. If we don't stop it, it will consume us both."

Before Aveline could respond, a faint knock echoed through the room. Both of them turned toward the door.

"Who could that be at this hour?" Aveline asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Lucian moved cautiously to the door, his every movement tense and deliberate. He opened it slowly, revealing a cloaked figure standing in the hallway. The figure's face was uncertain, but their voice was low and urgent.

"You don't have much time," the figure said, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation. "The wraith is only the beginning. The darkness is awakening, and it's coming for both of you."

Lucian's eyes narrowed. "Who are you?"

The figure lowered their hood, revealing a weathered face with piercing blue eyes. "My name is Elijah. I was once like you, Lucian-a creature bound by darkness. But I found a way to break the curse, and I'm here to help you do the same."

Lucian studied him warily. "Why now? Why reveal yourself after all this time?"

Elias's gaze flicked to Aveline. "Because she changes everything. Her presence has shifted the balance, and the darkness is responding. If you want to save her-and yourself-you'll need my help."

Aveline stepped forward, her fear giving way to determination. "Then help us. Tell us what we need to do."

Elijah nodded. "The answers lie in the Mirror of Eternity-a relic that can reveal the truth of your curse and the means to end it. But it is not without its dangers. The mirror demands a price, and its visions can drive even the strongest minds to madness."

Lucian's jaw tightened. "Where can we find it?"

Elijah hesitated. "The mirror is hidden within the ruins of Blackthorn Abbey-a place steeped in ancient magic and guarded by those who seek to protect its secrets. You'll need more than courage to survive."

Lucian glanced at Aveline, his expression conflicted. "This journey will be perilous. I can't ask you to come with me."

"You're not asking," Aveline said firmly. "I'm coming with you. We face this together, or not at all."

Elijah's lips curled into a faint smile. "She's braver than most, Lucian. You'd do well to keep her close."

Lucian sighed, the weight of the decision heavy on his shoulders. "Very well. We will leave at dawn."

As the storm outside continued to rage, Aveline felt a spark of hope amidst the fear. The path ahead was uncertain, and the dangers were great, but for the first time, she felt as though they were moving toward something-toward answers, and perhaps even toward a future free from the shadows.

Little did they know, the darkness was already one step ahead, watching and waiting for its moment to strike.
